Last seen recovering in Mexico after catching a bullet toward the end of Season 4, Mike Ehrmantraut will not, cannot simply fade away. Played with a kind of volcanic calm by Jonathan Banks, Mike — an ex-cop, consigliere, hit man and fixer for Gus Fring; a father figure of sorts to Jesse (whose biological dad might as well be from another, tangential universe, so fundamentally different are parent and child); a devoted grandpa; a seemingly simple fellow who occasionally shows glimpses of a nuanced, protean inner life — is one of those sneakily powerful “minor” characters that none but the very greatest dramas can accommodate. (In any other series, after all, he would be far too immense, too vivid to warrant only occasional screen time.) So, the question remains: Where is he? And how much, if any, of his perfectly balanced bodhisattva-Terminator mojo will Mike retain when — not if, but when — he returns?
