On children’s books you won’t mind reading to your kids a million times
Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann is a bedtime book. Summer bedtime is later. That means you get to read it slower. Another great summer-evening read is Peter McCarty’s Hondo and Fabian, a quiet, supersweet tale about the various adventures of a cat and a dog. Hondo the dog runs around on the beach, and Fabian the cat just lies around and never leaves the house. Hervé Tullet’s Press Here is nonnarrative — sort of like a paper version of an app — but really funny and charming. I wish I’d thought of it. And you can never go wrong with the George and Martha books by James Marshall. But what I would really recommend is getting the whole family together to write and illustrate a story. Date it, go to a copy shop and get it bound; then you have a book that you’ve made as a family. If you do this every summer, pretty soon you’ll have a library of really awesome stuff.
