Elena Roger, the star of this season’s much anticipated revival of Evita, proved something of a disappointment — to me as well as the Tony folks, who passed over her for a Best Actress nomination. That would be enough of a blow to the actress playing one of the most celebrated female roles in modern musicals. But a bigger insult awaited her on the Tony telecast. The excerpt from Evita chosen for the show, “The Money Keeps Rolling In,” gave all the singing to Ricky Martin as narrator Che, while poor Roger could only glower mutely. Now you really can cry for her, Argentina.
