Steve Kazee, left, and Cristin Milioti in 'Once'
In further proof that the Tony folks like their musicals modest, this year’s leader in nominations (with 11) is Once, a low-tech, low-key adaptation of a low-budget Irish film about a Dublin street musician and the Czech immigrant he falls in love with. Meanwhile, the Disney factory, which has been snubbed for most of its splashy fairy-tale extravaganzas (The Little Mermaid), pulled in a surprising eight nods for its relatively small-scale Newsies, about a newsboys strike in 1899 New York. Neither show deserves all the accolades, but Once looks likely to be the big winner.
