Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy, starring Clint Eastwood, began with A Fistful of Dollars, continued with For a Few Dollars More and ended with his 1966 epic, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Of the film, in which the three title characters engage in a search to find missing Confederate gold shortly after the Civil War, TIME critic Richard Schickel wrote, “Leone’s magnificent style is all contrasts (huge panoramic shots alternating with tight close-ups, very slow build-ups to lightning-fast action). This perfectly matches a narrative that encompasses sadistic brutality, wild humor and, yes, a tragic vision of war and its consequences.”
