The television sitcom Everybody Hates Chris is inspired by the teenage adventures of Chris Rock, but Rock need not be so self-deprecating: the three Grammy and three Emmy awards he’s won since his time on SNL prove that the show’s title couldn’t be any further from the truth. Rock joined SNL in 1990, and — along with fellow cast members Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Norm MacDonald, David Spade and Rob Schneider — helped change the show’s tone significantly during his three-season stint by introducing louder and more outrageous forms of comedy that were a marked shift from the subtle wit employed by the original ’70s cast. Many considered Rock’s time on the show to be the second golden age of SNL, and while he has enjoyed great success in both acting and stand-up comedy since his departure, Saturday night hasn’t been the same since.
