Thirty-seven years. That’s how long it took this legendary, presumed lost Beach Boys masterpiece to come to market. Brian Wilson had long been fairly unstable — holed up in his home, maybe recording, maybe not. It was a nervous breakdown following Pet Sounds that put the kibosh on Smile in the first place. But in 2004, working with collaborators Van Dyke Parks and Darian Sahanaja, Wilson finally completed the album. It was rapturously received.
