Two suburban couples meet over a backyard barbecue. One (David Schwimmer and Amy Ryan) are longtime residents, as wholesome as a welcome-wagon supper. The other (Darren Pettie and Sharon Sokolovic) are newcomers, a more enigmatic, rootless, vaguely dangerous pair — who steadily begin to disrupt the world of neatly tended lawns and carefully nurtured lies. Lisa D’Amour’s play, first staged at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater, keeps taking unexpected turns as it descends into a nightmarish parable of social disconnection.
