Having spent a lot of time this past couple of weeks looking back on 2010 here, it’s time to look forward. TV doesn’t have the same kind of lead time that, say, movies do: this time last year, we did not know what the broadcast fall schedules would be, or that Conan O’Brien would end the year with a talk show on a different network …
Spoilers for the season finale of Justified coming up after the jump:
Justified started this season as a show about crimes of the week, but from the beginning, and increasingly as the season went on and improved, it was also about crimes of the past. On a social level, it was about the culture of criminality that troubled this corner …
Quick spoilers for last night’s Justified coming up after the jump:
A big ongoing issue in TV today is serial vs. episodic drama: that is, dramas that tell stories that unfold over an entire season or season as opposed to ones that tell stories wrapped up in a single episode. An extreme example of the former would be The Wire or Six …
No time for an elaborate writeup of last night’s Justified, but I was glad to see the show move away from the self-contained stories (albeit very good ones) of the last few weeks to get at some of the reasons that coming home to Harlan County was such an unwelcome idea to Raylan. To wit: Daddy.
We met the tough, criminal cuss who is …
It’s getting to the point where Tuesday needs its own week. American Idol and Lost being Tuned In mainstays, watching and blogging them take up the whole night (and, depending on my energy level and loquaciousness, into Wednesday morning). I’m still watching Justified, The Good Wife, Parenthood and V (pretty much in that order), but I …
Tonight FX debuts Justified, its Elmore Leonard-based US marshal drama starring Timothy Olyphant. I liked what I’ve seen a lot, and my review ran long enough ago that I figured I should point you to it again:
It seems like TV networks have been talking about remaking the western for longer than they actually made them. Maybe the genre,

Also in this week’s print TIME is my review of FX’s Justified, which so far I am loving, and not just because of my man-crush on Timothy Olyphant. (Mrs. Tuned In likes him too so it’s a wholesome shared family interest.) It doesn’t debut until March 16, but the review had to run early for boring scheduling / air-traffic-control …
I may be on vacation, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not working. Depending on how you define “work.” As I write this, I’m already looking at a tall stack of screeners to watch for midseason 2010 (including Big Love, 24 and Chuck for January). And there’s quite a roster of high-profile new projects for 2010 already. After the jump, I …
Busy working on things-that-are-not-this-blog. While I’m otherwise occupied, enjoy this new FX clip for Justified (formerly Lawman), premiering in March. It’s a trailer, rather than the cool extended scene we saw last fall (which is no longer available for embedding), but I’m excited anyway. Cowboy hats, Walton Goggins and rockets!
FX announced its midseason schedule today. On tap: Archer, Damages and Nip/Tuck (doesn’t it feel like Nip/Tuck is always returning?) in January; a new Louis C.K. comedy, Louie, in the spring; and in March, the much-anticipated (by me, anyway) Timothy Olyphant drama, once called Lawman, which will now be titled Justified.
Looking forward …
