I joked yesterday about the fact that death is a temporary state on Lost, but it seems pretty clear that, whatever mythology eventually gets revealed, it will have to have something to do with explaining about why we see (or think we do?) so many dead people walking around on The Island.
As with Battlestar Galactica, the solution goes to the question of whether Lost’s answers are scientific, spiritual or both. Maybe the walking dead are actual, honest-to-Anubis ghosts. Maybe they’re the function of some temporal anomaly. Maybe they’re manifestations of Smokey—who, in turn, could be explained through science or spirituality.
So you tell me: Where do you think the ghosts come from?
(Speaking of Smokey, I re-watched last season’s finale yesterday, and noticed that the sound of the chains dragging Juliet into the mineshaft were like the sound of Smokey dragging Locke much earlier in the series. Aha! There must be some connection between The Incident and Smokey! Of course, it turns out other people had the same insight about five minutes after the scene aired. So much for my brilliant theorizing.)
