Smart musical choices have inspired some of the finest scenes of HBO’s series Girls, from comedic sequences like Hannah Horvath’s first night using cocaine (set to Icona Pop’s “I Love It”) to kinder, sweeter moments, like Hannah and Marnie’s first season dance party to Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own.” The show’s third season, which is currently airing, includes new music from artists like Beck, Jenny Lewis, and Lily Allen; one of its best features yet arrives courtesy of the ascendant R&B star Miguel, whose contribution “Simplethings” was released today.
A potent blend of distorted, muddy riffs, naked lust, and soaring, agile vocals, the song finds Miguel searching for someone to share the titular simple things in life with — that’s laughter, time to relax, and something to smoke. Naturally.
Girls’ second soundtrack, entitled Volume 2: All Adventurous Women Do…, is out Feb. 11.
