“Take a Bite of the Wild Slice” with Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin’s pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band called — what else? — Pizza Underground
Formed in February of 2012, PU — which includes Culkin (percussion, kazoo, and vocals) and four musicians from New York’s anti-folk scene: Matt Colbourn (guitar/vocals), Phoebe Kreutz (glockenspiel/vocals), Deenah Vollmer (pizza box/vocals) and Austin Kilham (tambourine/vocals) — create their tasty-sounding songs by changing all the lyrics of Velvet Underground and Lou Reed songs to pizza references.
Their debut demo (listen below) — recorded “live at Macaulay Culkin’s house” in November — is filled with hunger-inducing covers of Velvet standards like “I’m Beginning to Eat the Slice,” “I’m Waiting for Delivery Man,” “All the Pizza Parties” and the album’s highlight “Cheese Days.” The brightly melancholic ballad, features such cheesy lyrics like “I don’t do too much toppings these days / [These] days I seem to order cheese, and don’t say please, and then I walk away.” The band recently performed at Comic Arts Brooklyn as well as at a Lou Reed tribute show at anti-folk landmark the Sidewalk Cafe.
No news on whether we can expect a full album in 30 minutes or less.
