Today, Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash debuts her cover of the bluegrass song “Lonesome River” exclusively on TIME.com. The mellow tune is part of The Storm Is Passing Over, an indie-folk album of “16 classic American storm songs” produced by Mason Jar Music, a Brooklyn-based musicians’ collective, to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims. Listeners can download the album on TheStormIsPassingOver.com in exchange for a donation, and all proceeds will be donated to Occupy Sandy, Occupy Wall Street’s volunteer storm-relief effort in New York City and the tristate area.
Over two weeks in December, the album’s musicians recorded their tracks from as far away as Nashville, Portland and Paris. Cash and her husband, guitarist-producer John Leventhal, joined Mason Jar musicians to record “Lonesome River” in the collective’s Brooklyn studio.
In addition to Cash on vocals, “Lonesome River” features Dan Knobler on guitar, Jason Burger on drums, Zack Rosen on bass, Russell Durham on fiddle, Jake Sherman on organ and Aoife O’Donovan and Tift Merritt on background vocals.
This track is the country-music star’s latest contribution to Sandy relief efforts. Last month, Brooklyn Daily reported that Cash, the eldest daughter of country legend Johnny Cash, headlined a benefit concert to raise money for small businesses in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood that were flooded by storm water.
