The 86th Academy Awards saw plenty of fantastic winners — and some surprising losers as five Best Picture nominees were shut out entirely.
The night’s biggest shutout went to American Hustle, which was up for a whopping 10 awards — including one in each acting category, Best Director and Best Picture. Surprisingly, everyone walked away empty-handed. Only two films have ever received worse snubs: 1977’s The Turning Point and 1985’s The Color Purple, which were each nominated for 11 awards, but didn’t win a thing. Other films that share the dubious distinction of receiving 10 nominations with no wins are 2002’s Gangs of New York and 2010’s True Grit. Ouch.
Yet Captain Phillips, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street and Philomena didn’t fare well either. Captain Phillips and Nebraska were each nominated for six awards, but failed to snag any wins, while The Wolf of Wall Street — with its five nominations — was also snubbed, meaning we’re once again left waiting for a Leonardo DiCaprio win. And Philomena, which had four nominations, also failed to yield a statue.
The four other Best Picture nominees — Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Her — all scored at least one win, with 12 Years A Slave taking the Best Picture prize.
