Television comedy star Sid Caesar passed away on Wednesday. He was 91 years old.
TV host Larry King broke news of his death on Twitter, according to Variety, writing “Sorry to learn about the passing of Sid Caesar—a dear friend, a comic genius & an American classic—there will never be another one like him.” A family spokesman also confirmed the death to the Associated Press.
The details of Caesar’s death have not been released.
Caesar shot to fame on 1950s live comedy program Your Show of Shows, on which he and his co-stars jammed comedy sketches, dance numbers and popular music. According to Variety, the show won two Emmys and was nominated for the award every year between 1951 and 1958. Caesar also featured in movies such as Grease, It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World and Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie. He battled alcohol and barbiturate addiction throughout his life, but continued to perform well into the 2000s.
In 2011, the Television Critics Association gave Caesar a lifetime achievement award. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1958.
