The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was the reigning champ at the box office on Christmas Day, besting The Wolf of Wall Street, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and the debut of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Bilbo Baggins and his dwarfs and elves raked in about $9.2 million Wednesday for the top slot, compared with the $9.1 million Martin Scorsese’s titillating Wolf brought in for its Christmas release, according to early Deadline estimates.
Anchorman 2 brought in about $8 million, which suggests only a 2% drop in sales. Meanwhile, Fox’s visually dazzling The Secret Life of Walter Mitty mustered only $7.8 million to $7.9 million with its debut release.
