How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are making a spinoff show. But beyond the title, How I Met Your Dad, the series will be completely different, they say. “It will be a brand new story,” Bays told a press conference on Thursday.

But some are skeptical. None of the characters from the current series will make an appearance in the new program, but the narrative follows a female character’s journey to find love — which sounds remarkably similar to Ted Mosby’s quest to meet the mother of his children. And while CBS has committed to making a pilot, there’s no guarantee that the full series will go ahead at this stage.

Craig Thomas insisted there will be no overlap. “We will have to make our case to the audience in a whole new way, with a whole new world, with whole new characters,” he said. And meanwhile: “We want to honor How I Met Your Mother with the cleanest ending possible.”

The ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother ends on April 28.
