In this fantasy-comedy, directed by Francis Ford Coppola of all people, dissatisfied housewife Peggy Sue (Kathleen Turner) faints at her high school reunion, sending her into a dream state where she gets to go back to her senior year, with all the rueful knowledge she possesses from an additional 25 years of living, and tries not to make all the same mistaken life choices. First among them: marrying the ridiculous, pompadoured, would-be doo-wop singer Charlie (Coppola nephew Nicolas Cage, showing the first signs of his famous Elvis infatuation). Failing to ditch him, she tries to teach him “She Loves You,” so he can make a mint off the song before the Beatles do.
Like Romy and Michele, Peggy Sue’s high-school class includes a tormented science geek who returns as a hugely successful entrepreneur (Barry Miller); from him, Peggy Sue learns that time is not necessarily linear; it’s more like a burrito. You can make it fold in on itself, and you can fill it with whatever experiences you like. That’s about as profound as this wistful comedy gets; eventually, Peggy Sue must decide whether to return to the present and the life she rejected. And when she gets back, whether she’ll have Mexican food for dinner.
