A 1963 painting by iconic pop artist Andy Warhol was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $105 million Wednesday, breaking the previous record for a Warhol painting set at $71.7 million in 2007.
The piece, titled Silver Car Crash (Doulbe Disaster) portrays the immediate aftermath of an automobile accident.
The Warhol bidding came just a day after the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction, a tryptich called Three Studies of Lucian Freud, went at Christie’s for $142.4 million. That sale broke the previous record, set in 2012, of $120 million paid for Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.”
