Lou Reed, the legendary singer and former Velvet Underground frontman who died Sunday, passed away because of the liver disease he had struggled with for months, his doctor confirmed.
Reed underwent a liver transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in April, and his wife, Laurie Anderson, told the London Times at the time that he might not “ever totally recover from this.” For his part, Reed released a statement shortly after his surgery , saying, “I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry. I am bigger and stronger than ever.”
The singer had a large cult following and after his death on Sunday, everyone from David Bowie, Motley Crue, Cyndi Lauper and, even, the Vatican have rushed to pay tribute.
