Singer Chris Brown is surrounded by bodyguards as he departs the H. Carl Moultriel courthouse Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, in Washington.

The assault charges filed against singer Chris Brown and his bodyguard were reduced from felonies to simple misdemeanors on Monday. The pair was accused of attacking a man in front of the W Hotel in Washington early Sunday morning.

According to police reports acquired by CNN, Brown told the victim, Isaac Adams Parker — who tried to get into a photo the singer was taking with a woman — that he was “not down with that gay sh-t” and “felt like boxing,” before allegedly punching Parker, 20, in the face. Brown’s bodyguard Chris Hollosy reportedly also threw a punch.

Brown and Hollosy were released from a Washington jail without bond following their court appearance Monday, after spending 36 hours in jail. Brown, who is still on probation for his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna, was ordered to report to his probation officer in California, CNN reports. He is also required to stay at least 100 yards away from the alleged victim.

Under the terms of Brown’s probation, he is required to stay out of all legal trouble, including any arrest that does not result in a conviction. In August, the singer agreed to complete another 1,000 hours of community service — in addition to the original 1,400 hours he agreed to — over concerns he may have already violated the terms of his parole.
