The longtime character actor Ed Lauter died Wednesday at age 74 from a rare cancer, his publicist told The Hollywood Reporter. Though his name may not be all that recognizable, his face is: Lauter had dozens of small roles on TV shows throughout his four-decade career, including Charlie’s Angels, Magnum P.I., Miami Vice, The X-Files, Law and Order, E.R. and Grey’s Anatomy.
He also graced the big screen with performances as Captain Knauer in The Longest Yard and Peppy’s butler in the Oscar-winning The Artist. He shot three movies that have yet to be released and will hit theaters in the next two years.
