AMC announced today plans for a new show set in the wold of The Walking Dead. Steering this yet-to-be-named “companion series” will be Walking Dead executive producers Robert Kirkman (on whose comic books the TV series is based), Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. We won’t likely see anything until 2015, but Kirkman says getting to “create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe” provides a thrill.
“The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing,” he says.
The fourth season of The Walking Dead—the top show on television among adults 18-49—begins Oct. 13. Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager, says that The Walking Dead world is so big, giving viewers an entirely new perspective into the zombie apocalypse was an obvious step for the network, which has other hit shows in Mad Men and Breaking Bad.
Following on its drama-making success, AMC already plans two new shows for 2014, Halt & Catch Fire and Turn. Just today the network started shooting a new pilot, Line of Sight, directed by Jonathan Demme. Plus, the Breaking Bad spinoff series, with the working title Better Call Saul, has gotten folks plenty excited. We’ll see if a The Walking Dead spinoff does the same.
