There was a well-publicized search for the actress to play Scarlett O’Hara in the big-screen version of Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller Gone with the Wind. Among the names that the filmmakers had on his short list were Jean Arthur and Paulette Goddard. GWTW producer David O. Selznick had seen O’Hara in several West End plays and found her talented and beautiful—but much too British to play the hot-headed Southern belle. Leigh had other ideas. She took a trip to Hollywood and convinced Selznick to film this test.
