After Jurassic Park, it seemed dinosaurs were everywhere. They invaded the buddy-cop comedy in this movie, set in a future where science has genetically engineered talking dinosaurs. Here, hard-boiled cop Whoopi Goldberg’s partner is an eight-foot-tall, cookie-eating, Tyrannosaurus Rex (voiced by Father of the Bride groom George Newbern), sort of like Barney, only a lot less menacing.
Together, they must solve the murders of some prehistoric creatures, uncovering in the process a plot by a mad scientist to bring about humanity’s extinction via a new ice age. Sounds iffy? No wonder Goldberg threatened to drop out of the project, until the producer hit her with a $20 million lawsuit. (They settled, with Goldberg agreeing to star for $7 million, $2 million above her agreed-upon salary.) After all that, the movie still skipped theaters and went straight to video – at a budget of $33.5 million, it was the most expensive straight-to-video movie yet made.
