Since getting his start working at a Vancouver college radio station in 1987, Nardwuar the Human Serviette has interviewed some of the biggest names in music, from Kurt Cobain to Lil Wayne. His disarmingly weird interrogatory style — which includes asking questions about incredibly obscure events in his subject’s lives — has gained him a cult following. And, as you might expect, a few enemies (See: Nardwuar vs. Kid Cudi).
Subjects who actually make it through an interview without walking out can expect Nardwuar’s signature sign-off: A “Keep on rockin’ in the free world”, and a partial “Shave and a Haircut” — “doot doola doot doo” — which the subject is supposed to complete (“doot doo“).
But for all his crazy schtick, Nardwuar is a serious journalist who does an incredible amount of research into each of his interviews. Watch as he navigates this year’s SXSW festival, joined by his video crew, punk band and a stack of vintage records to hand out along the way.
