Foo Fighters founder and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl will debut a new film — and a new band — at the Sundance Film Festival, which starts on Jan. 17 in Park City, Utah.
Rolling Stone reports that the group, Sound City Players, will perform on Jan. 18 and include musicians who appear in Grohl’s documentary Sound City, a history of the defunct, grungy recording studio in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley whose productions include Nirvana’s 1991 breakout album Nevermind — and hit music by Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Guns N’ Roses, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails and Metallica. While the lineup has not yet been revealed, the film’s soundtrack features performances by Stevie Nicks, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails).
Grohl, whose band Foo Fighters has been on “hiatus” since October, calls Sound City “my life’s most important work.”
He performed the Sound City track “Cut Me Some Slack” as part of a Nirvana reunion with Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear and guest star Paul McCartney at the Dec. 12 concert at Madison Square Garden to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims. You can listen to the track below:
