The situation that leads to Chris Rock (as Presidential candidate Mays Gilliam) participating in a political debate in 2003’s Head of State is unlikely—a Presidential and a VP candidate are killed in a plane crash mid-campaign, driving party higher-ups to choose Rock’s D.C. alderman as their replacement candidate—but, once he gets there, he pulls it off with flying colors. Despite some now-dated references to Nelly and Destiny’s Child, the fictional debate bears close resemblance to a debate you might see on television this month…um, sort of. Not really. Especially not when it devolves into playground taunting.
