The Buzz: Starting with the outstanding kick-off track “Blood Red Youth,” California Wives fills their debut LP with infectious pop hooks mixed with stadium rock guitar chords. Part pure indie rock, part ’80s-inspired roller rink music, the band earned their New Wave cred when New Order’s Peter Hook invited the band to open up for him. But California Wives doesn’t just hatch formulaic waver rock, instead merging the best of the ’80s with a modern indie aesthetic.
Listen: “Purple” combines poppy lyrics with clever hooks and a textural depth to create a well-constructed, indie-rock number.
