Do you know what horror means? Do you know that horror has a face? For Apocalypse Now audiences, that face belongs to Marlon Brando, as the renegade Colonel Kurtz. When Kurtz, the object of the movie’s plot-driving jungle trek, is finally found in Cambodia, his baldness is the first thing we get to see. There’s a glimpse of the curve of his head, a glistening fingernail moon glowing yellow in the malarial light and then shining through the water he splashes on his head. And, if we hadn’t guessed it already, the ominous implications of his hairlessness prove true: Kurtz, formerly a decorated Green Beret, has not just gone off the rails—he’s gone bad. Not only does he have a shiny head, he has a severed head, ready to drop in the lap of his pursuer Captain Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen). All together now: “The horror…”
