Pip pip! It’s an international trailer for the latest cinematic take on the Dickens classic Great Expectations. Or should we say Große Erwartungen: the film has a pedigreed British cast (Ralph Fiennes as the convict Magwitch, Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham) and director (Mike Newell of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), but the trailer comes complete with German subtitles. After a premiere at this September’s upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, Great Expectations will open in Ireland and the UK at the end of November—and on December 6 in Germany, natürlich. The U.S. release is, as yet, unscheduled.

It’s not as if the world is starving for Great Expectations movies—the latest big-name one was the 1998 modernized Ethan Hawke/Gwyneth Paltrow version, and PBS did a Masterpiece version just this past April—but there’s no denying that Helena Bonham Carter is an easy choice for the crazed Havisham. She looks resplendently moth-eaten in her old wedding dress, with the nutso wide-eyed whispering that we know so well from her roles in Harry Potter movies, Alice in WonderlandSweeney Todd, et cetera. As Havisham herself would say: “Love her!”
