Once Burton departed the franchise, the future of the films were entrusted to director Joel Schumacher. Batman Forever found Val Kilmer behind the cape as Schumacher steered the movie back to its campy TV roots. The Batmobile was also updated. Decorative lighting, as well as wing-shaped fins were added. A grappling hook enabled the vehicle to mount walls, and chase sequences were literally elevated by the car's ability to jump between surfaces.
