In what was either the worst public relations move of the century in an effort to control a spinning story or the oddest spontaneous reaction of a head-over-heels-in-love guy, Cruise did what no one had ever done before: He jumped up on Oprah’s yellow couch to profess his love for his girlfriend, Katie Holmes. With rumors swirling that his budding romance was nothing more than a publicity stunt, Cruise took that publicity to new heights—okay, so he didn’t jump all that high—but he did emphatically declare he was truly in love in 2005. The fallout was swift and full of parodies that will last as long as couches exist.
