Cruise shifted gears after Top Gun and dove into Oliver Stone’s 1989 movie Born on the Fourth of July. At the time, Cruise said that people warned him the movie would ruin his career and he should focus on a winning combination, such as Top Gun 2. Instead, he chose a challenge. There was one similarity with Top Gun, however, as Born on the Fourth of July was the third time that he had played a soldier. He has now done so seven times in his career. But the 1989 rendition was the first to earn him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. (He was Best Actor nod for Jerry Maguire and a Supporting Actor nomination for Magnolia.)
