Played by: Jessica Alba
On the dangerous waterfront of shadow-drenched world of Basin City, a cop saves 11-year-old Nancy Callahan from being raped and murdered by the psychopathic son of a corrupt senator. For his efforts, Detective John Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is shot by his partner and framed for the would-be killer’s crimes. Before he’s sent to prison, a grateful Nancy vows to write him every week. After eight years, the letters stop coming. Fearing for the girl’s safety, Hartigan confesses to the crimes to win parole and tracks down Nancy in a bar, where she works as a stripper. The two are briefly reunited, but theirs is a doomed relationship—both are victims in this depressing tapestry of broken souls. Alba (and the rest of the talented cast) play their parts with appropriate levels of emotional detachment, but they’re almost secondary elements in this sprawling and visually arresting noir fantasia.
