Played by: Natalie Portman
This emotionally bruising drama (based on the award-winning play of the same name) is narratively dense and intertwined, examining the kinds of damage wrought when the lives of two (impossibly good-looking) couples intersect. The film begins with Alice (a winsome Portman), a 20-year-old American who has found work stripping in a London gentleman’s club, meeting handsome newspaper writer Dan (played by Jude Law), after she suffers minor injuries when struck by a cab. (See, even that set-up was complicated!) Anna (Julia Roberts) and Larry (Clive Owens) soon enter the picture—all kinds of infidelities quickly ensue. Alice, the youngest in this group, is also its most vulnerable and enigmatic: a key piece of information is revealed at the end of the film, but it only raises more questions about the character.
