Just thinking about Samara Morgan (Daveigh Chase), the cursed little girl in The Ring, gives us chills a decade later. And that’s despite the fact that nobody has a VCR anymore. Samara, whose stringy hair hides her face for most of her screen time, is the powerful and possessed girl behind the VHS tape that kills everyone who watches it. There are a few minutes when you might be tempted to think she’s just an innocent child, but those are the few minutes when you forget that pretend innocence is the go-to trick for children who are anything but. The kid doesn’t mean well (no pun intended). Chase got a well-deserved MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in 2003 and, though the film was based on a Japanese thriller called Ringu and led to a sequel, it’s this particular Samara’s menacing promise of death that keeps us from pressing play.
