This Christmas Baz Luhrmann gives F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic Jazz-age melograma a glitzy remake, and from the looks of the first trailer it’s going to be a far cry from the 1970s adaptation starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
Luhrmann isn’t afraid of anachronisms and uses Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild,” from their Watch The Throne album, as well as Jack White’s powerful cover of U2’s “Love is Blindness” with scenes from the roaring ’20s in New York City.
That means flapper dresses, confetti-strew parties, popping bottles and some fabulous suits. Leonardo DiCaprio is the tortured Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire is Midwestern outsider Nick Carraway—whose voice-over is reminiscent of Ewan McGregor’s in Moulin Rouge. Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan, the object of their affections. We also get to see Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who plays Meyer Wolfsheim, and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker.
