Artist: Craig Thompson
Winner of the both the Harvey Award and the Eisner Award, Blankets is a graceful coming-of-age story that begins with Craig Thompson’s Wisconsin childhood, growing up with his brother in a strict Evangelical household. As Thompson matures into adolescence, he drifts from his parents’ faith—and his family—yet still struggles to fit in with kids his age. Thompson finally connects with a group of similarly minded teens at Bible camp, where he also gets his first taste of love (resulting in his first taste of heartbreak soon after). Thomson’s continued search for peace, both with his family and within himself, carries him into young adulthood. Heartfelt and honest, as TIME wrote, Blankets “has the thematic sophistication, emotional sweep and beauty of (visual) language that mark the best novels of any kind.”
