THE MOVIE(S): Red River
THE HAT: Iconic actor meets iconic hat. John Wayne made at least 80 Westerns — and wore, with a natural and unstudied grace, a cowboy hat in nearly every one of them. Our favorite is the high-crown hat he wore as embattled rancher Thomas Dunson in Howard Hawks’ Red River — a hat style he also choose to use in The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
OTHER COWBOY HAT-WEARING CHARACTERS: Literally too numerous to make any comprehensive list, we’re especially partial to the hats worn by: Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) in My Darling Clementine, Lin McAdam (James Stewart) in Winchester 73, Will Kane (Gary Cooper) in High Noon, and the Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood) in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
