THE MOVIE(S): The Hound of the Baskervilles and practically every other cinematic depiction of the famed sleuth
THE HAT: The deerstalker, as one might guess, is a hunter’s cap: The twin brims provide protection from the sun and rain, the earflaps offer relief from the cold. Interestingly, nowhere in his novellas and short stories does Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ever mention his most famous creation specifically wearing such headgear, though it certainly may be implied based on loose descriptions: Costume designers simply continued the tradition started by the illustrators of the original serialized stories. What the movies got wrong is having Holmes wear the hat in the city. The detective would never commit such a fashion faux pas.
OTHER DEERSTALKER-WEARING CHARACTERS: None we can think of, as it’s a pretty darn hard look to pull off.
