It’s possible to approach this documentary as the purest party movie — an audio-visual record of comedian Dave Chappelle’s efforts to stage a block party in New York City. Not just any block party — but a full-blown concert, involving the talents of, among others: Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott, the Roots, and the Central State University marching band. The block party itself — in which a street corner in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Clinton Hill was temporarily transformed into the center of the hip-hop universe — is captured with great verve and energy by director Michel Gondry.
