Earlier this week, we brought you the exclusive reveal of the movie trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (above), opening in theaters June 22. The weekend prior, in conjunction with Lincoln’s birthday, a team from Twentieth Century Fox was on the ground in Springfield, Illinois, taking a rare tour of the vault at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. TIME was fortunate enough to be provided with select photos from that visit, and we thought you’d enjoy a sneak peek at these historical artifacts. Below, we take our first steps into the rarely-seen vault:

Preserved for posterity — the last ax used by President Lincoln prior to his death:

Here, the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter crew responsible for the vault visit: (from left) Producer Jim Lemley, director Timur Bekmambetov, star Benjamin Walker, and screenwriter and author Seth Grahame-Smith. Lincoln historian James Cornelius is holding President Lincoln’s hat:

Here, we see Lincoln’s trademark stovepipe hat, crafted from beaver pelt to ensure a waterproof finish. Of particular notice: The two discolored spots on the left side of the frame — where the president’s fingers would go every time he doffed his hat in public.

A remarkable discovery here — the glove that President Lincoln was wearing the night he was assassinated at Ford’s theater. The thumb is darker due to the blood that dripped onto it as it was resting in Lincoln’s left pocket:

Below, pieces of the president’s original sarcophagus. These were discovered under the crypt of his tomb when they laid Lincoln to rest for the final time (he was interred 17 different times after an attempted theft on the body). He now lies 10 feet below the ground, encased in steel and concrete boxes, and his body faces east in the customs of the Victorian era:

And a cryptic final discovery that should intrigue early fans of the Vampire Hunter trailer – a silver-tipped spike that was discovered in the vault, alongside a bronze cast of Lincoln’s head:
