Prints, drawings and photographs of and inspired by the writer are on display at London’s National Portrait Gallery, through April 22. Called “Charles Dickens: Life & Legacy,” the exhibit works to both archive and adulate his career. As one of the most famous literary figures of his time — not to mention enjoying the heights of celebrity while he was still alive — portraits of Dickens are numerous. Yet the collection illustrates not only the writer himself, but also his family, his most influential contemporaries, the colorful characters he created and the actors who’ve brought his work to the stage.
