There are several terrific eating scenes from this Pixar classic, including the color-sound symphonies that depict the super-refined palate of rodent-chef Remy, but the movie’s climactic scene is the most emotionally satisfying. Remy — now in charge of a kitchen that has all but been abandoned by the staff of Gusteau’s — must prepare a meal for Anton Ego, the poison-penned restaurant critic partly responsible for the demise of Remy’s ghostly mentor. In a daring move, Remy sends out a serving of the titular stewed-vegetable dish. Ego’s reaction to the dish, one that recalls for him a singularly happy childhood experience, is rapturous — a wonderful mashup of Proust’s madeleine with the beating-heart rebirth of the Grinch.
INTERESTING FACT: For his work in serving up this animated treat (as well as The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, among others), director Brad Bird was given his first live-action project: a modest little spy film called Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
