New Year's Rockin' Eve was created in response to Guy Lombardo's popular CBS Radio broadcast, which featured big band music. Aware that such music turned off the younger generation, Dick Clark launched his own TV special; pictured here during the first show in 1973 is rock band Three Dog Night.
