Let’s be clear: Sucker Punch is not a good movie. It’s not even a good “bad” movie. But the trailer, which showcases the considerable, if sometimes misguided, talents of director Zack Snyder, can offer some value to the discerning viewer. Taken as cultural artifact, it presents the spectacular collision of all those things that appeal to a certain kind of over-stimulated adolescent male — a fanboy fantasia that has been breathed to life by Hollywood’s leading craftsman. So, yeah, as an object of minor academic interest, it’s a mindless, hilarious, (and improbably bombastic) 150-second blast.
MEMORABLE IMAGE: We’re only casually acquainted with the works of Joseph Campbell, but we’re pretty sure he never wrote about the giant samurai wielding an enormous Gatling gun vanquished by a sword-wielding blond schoolgirl.
MEMORABLE LINE: “We’re already dead.”
MUSIC USED: “When the Levee Breaks,” Led Zeppelin / “Panic Switch,” Silversun Pickups
