I’m a sucker for George Bailey. The protagonist of Frank Capra’s 1946 film It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the most genuinely likable characters I’ve ever seen on screen — a kind man who’s flawed in all the right places. I’ve watched the movie dozens of times and yet when George finally realizes how, well, wonderful his bankrupt business and dysfunctional family really are, it gets me every time.

TIME’s movie critic Richard Corliss helped put together a delightful video about his favorite Christmas movies and television specials, and I’m happy to see that ol’ George Bailey made the cut. From the 1951 Scrooge to Will Ferrell’s 2003 neo-classic Elf, Corliss covers all the holiday bases — and even adds a few movies you might not expect. Check out his list and let us know if you agree.
