Madonna performs on stage

NBC announced during last night’s Detroit Lions-New Orleans Saints football game that Madonna would be the headlining performer at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show on Feb. 5, in Indianapolis.

The pick is hardly surprising; the Super Bowl is watched by over 100 million people and the NFL historically picks major music acts. The Black Eyed Peas, the Who, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Prince and the Rolling Stones are some of the recent artists to grace the stage (on top of the football field). Madonna will likely perform several of her most famous hits, but she does have a new album scheduled to come out in early 2012 so she may work in some new material as well. The Super Bowl is a great way for her to make sure that millions of people will hear her songs.

Actually, the only thing that’s surprising about the NFL’s announcement is the realization that Madonna hasn’t played the Super Bowl before. What other acts have been overlooked? In coming years, we’d like to see some Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, or Lady Gaga. Although with Gaga’s flair for costumes, you’re almost guaranteed another so-called wardrobe malfunction.
