A human gets pregnant by a vampire. You can see the difficulties. When Stephanie Meyer published the final book in her Twilight franchise, many took notice of a scene in which a quickly growing half-vampire/half-human baby has to be removed from the protagonist’s womb. As TIME film critic Mary Pols writes in her review of the latest film version, “There has been much speculation over how the birth sequence would be handled. Even die-hard Meyer fans admit to being freaked out by how bloody and weird it is on the page, with fangs replacing surgical instruments. On the screen, it is a rapidly cut sequence of ketchup and interior views of veins, less horrifying than bizarre, and like the sex, oddly anticlimactic.” In some ways, hearing it described it is more traumatizing than actually seeing it.
